Helen Leone Ver Hoeven

HAWARDEN, IOWA – Helen Leone Ver Hoeven, 92, of Hawarden, formerly of Ireton, Iowa died on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at First Reformed Church in Ireton with Rev. Gerald Norman officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Ireton Community Center. Visitation with the family will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church or at the luncheon. The funeral will be livestreamed at facebook.com/FRCIreton. The family prefers, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given in Helen’s name to the First Reformed Church in Ireton or the West Sioux Educational Foundation.
Helen Leone Poll was born June 25, 1929, in Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mae (Houlton) Poll. She graduated from Ireton High School in 1947.
She married Anthony Ver Hoeven June 22, 1951, and moved to the farm in 1953. Helen attended Westmar College in Le Mars graduating in 1967. She taught elementary and middle school in Kingsley, Maurice, Maurice-Orange City and West Sioux in Ireton.
She was a member of Ireton First Reformed Church, taught Sunday School, member of Women's Guild, member of Hope Haven Ministries, and volunteered for 10 years in Hillcrest Care Center by helping serve the monthly birthday parties.
Anthony died January 16, 2009. Helen moved to Mica Hill/Hillcrest Health Care Center in August of 2018.
Survivors include her daughter, Debrah (Ben) Vander Kooi, Luverne, Minnesota; son, James (Glenda) Ireton, Iowa; two grandchildren, Bill Vander Kooi of St. Paul, Minnesota and Katrina and husband Andrew Wallmeyer of St. Paul, Minnesota; and great grandchildren, Juliana, Peter, and Vivian Wallmeyer; one sister, Mary (Michael) Magan of Ada, Michigan; special friends, Monty and Sue Terhune and their children George (Courtney) and Kathryn of Omaha, Nebraska. She is also survived by her in-laws, Ted Van Bruggen of Seminole, Florida and Dorothy Ver Hoeven Olson of Hawarden, Iowa.
Helen was preceded in death by husband, Anthony; parents, Henry and Mae (Houlton) Poll; stepfather, Lester Riter; and sister, Geraldine Van Bruggen. Also preceding her in death are her in-laws, Jake and Klasina Ver Hoeven, Gary and Loucella Barents, Bill and Dorothy Koopmans, Don and Marie Ver Hoeven, Clarence and Sadie Ver Hoeven, and Marvin Ver Hoeven.
