Hawarden, Iowa- Harlan (HD) D. Wheeler, 83, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Peppi's House hospice in Tucson. A celebration of his life was held in Tucson. A graveside service with military honors will be held Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 2:00pm, at the Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, with Pastor Dan Lozer officiating.
Harlan was born November 24, 1929 in Hawarden, Iowa to Ralph and Josephine (Briggs) Wheeler. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1947. He attended the University of South Dakota 1948-1951. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Navy and served as Hospital Corpsman First Class until his honorable discharge in 1955. He spent 36 years working for North Central Airlines/Northwestern Airlines.
Harlan hated the winters in Iowa and moved to Tucson in the late 1970s where he spent countless hours with his treasured horses. Over his lifetime he was blessed with many friendships. Harlan was a man of few words and had a kind and generous heart.
Harlan was preceded in death by long- time partner Shirley Dries and his parents.
