HAWARDEN, IOWA~ Glenn A. Wilkens, 88, of Hawarden, died Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with a Prayer Service 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Glenn A. Wilkens was born August 16, 1926 in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Herman and Edna Caroline (Stoltenberg) Wilkens. He attended country school and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy from January 1945 to November 1946 aboard the USS Harris and USS Execute, seeing action in the South Pacific. Following his military service he attended Chicago Motive Trades Institute for body and fender rebuilding graduating in 1949. Glenn married Beverly Du Playee on December 23, 1949.
He farmed near Hawarden until his retirement. Glenn enjoyed ballroom dancing and loved collecting toys, especially Texaco. He was a 50 year member of the Bergstrom-Bodeen American Legion Post 128 in Hudson, South Dakota and the VFW in Beresford, South Dakota.
Glenn is survived by three children, Raymond (Kim) Wilkens of LeMars, Iowa, Patti (Jake) Van Roekel of Ireton, Iowa, and Doug (Melodee) Wilkens of Hawarden; 5 grandchildren, Becky (Matt) Taylor, Sara Wilkens, Michael Van Roekel, Lisa (Devin) Van Der Brink, and Bode Wilkens; 5 great-grandchildren, Landon and Ian Taylor, Connor and Lauren Van Roekel, and Madison Van Der Brink; and 2 sisters, Fern Humphreys of Casper, Wyoming and Ruth Spicer of Conrad, Iowa;
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; 2 daughters, Judy and Vicky; a son, Michael; a granddaughter, Jessica Wilkens; 3 brothers, Walter, Wilmer, and Lester; and 2 sisters, Lucille Schiefen and Harriet Poe.
