Gilbert De Weerd

IRETON, IOWA- Gilbert De Weerd, 81, of Ireton, died on Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa, where he had been a resident for the past three years.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at the Ireton Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Nate Kuperus officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. Gilbert De Weerd was born April 11, 1936 near Maurice, Iowa, the son of Albert and Rose (De Jager) De Weerd. He attended country school and grew up in rural Maurice.

Gilbert married Mildred Westra on September 2, 1955 at Ireton, Iowa. They farmed near Ireton and Hawarden, Iowa. Gilbert was a feed salesman, hog buyer, and a truck driver.

He was a member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. Gilbert enjoyed his family, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mildred; 5 children, Glenda and Norm Kramer of Yankton, South Dakota, Arlin and Marlene De Weerd of Ireton, Donna and Ken Bliek of Merrill, Iowa, Marcia Van Der Stoep of Ireton, and Gary and Dawn De Weerd of Maurice; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Wayne and Delma De Weerd of Sioux Center, Iowa and Rod and Joanne De Weerd also of Sioux Center; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Carol Westra of Sioux Center, Glenn and Marilyn Westra of Rock Valley, Iowa, Harry and Darlene Westra also of Rock Valley, Ken and Arlys Westra of Aurora, Colorado, and Verlyn and Lori Westra of Orange City, Iowa.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Rose; the De Weerd sisters, Minnie, Ethel, and Jo; and Larry Van Der Stoep.
