Hudson, SD: Gilbert "Gib" Smith, 94, of Hudson, SD died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Canton, South Dakota. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the funeral service from 12:00 ' 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 with a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. all at the Hudson Lutheran Church. Rev. Gilbert was born September 10, 1919 in Hawarden, Iowa to Porter and Mable (Johnson) Smith. They then moved to Fairview, SD and then to Hudson, SD. Gilbert entered the US Army on March 19, 1941 and was one of the original members of the 48th Surgical Hospital when it was activated in February 1942 at Ft. Francis E. Warren, Wyoming. T/3 Smith was a surgical technician. He served in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, and the Rhineland in Germany. Gib was honorably discharged from the Army on August 22, 1945. In 2012, Gib was on the last South Dakota Honor Flight to Washington, DC.
On his return home to Hudson, Gib married his high school sweetheart, Gladys Wold on September 9, 1945. They had 2 children, Linda and Gary. Together they ran Smith Lockers in Hudson for 35 years. Gib spent the last few years at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Canton, SD.
Gilbert is survived by his daughter, Linda Willhoit of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Karon Smith of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 grandchildren, Paula (Greg) Swanson of Mitchell, SD, Amber Smith (Steve Toben) of Akron, IA and Mike Budd of Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Raymond (Lois) Smith of Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Opal Smith of Vermillion, SD; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Jackie Wold of Sioux Falls, SD; special friend and niece, Lou Toft of Hudson, SD; 5 great-grandchildren, Trever Budd, Macy and Tanner Swanson, Elizabeth and Jack Toben.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys; son, Gary Smith; son-in-law, John Willhoit; and brothers, Roger (Avis) Smith and Gordon Smith.
