Gertrude Huisman

Rock Valley, IA: Gertrude Huisman, 96, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Monday, November 5, 2018 at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley. Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 8 at 11:00 AM at First Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be held prior to the memorial service at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley with a prayer service beginning at 9:30 AM at the church. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Wednesday, November 7 from 5:30-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Gertrude Huisman, daughter of Ring and Winnie (Harskamp) Wallenburg, was born January 17, 1922, near Rock Rapids, Iowa. Gert was united in marriage to the love of her life, Matthew Huisman, on December 17, 1946. Together the couple farmed near Rock Valley, Iowa. In addition to farming and raising four daughters, Gert also sold Avon and Tupperware. After Matt entered the nursing home in 2003, Gert continued being a loving and devoted wife, visiting him twice a day until his death on November 22, 2006. On February 11, 2008, Gert’s home became Whispering Heights in Rock Valley where she was lovingly cared for the last 10 years of her life.

Gert enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She was especially good at baking pies, almond logs, and pig-in-the-blankets. She loved gardening and enjoyed sharing all her goodies with others. Gert always looked forward to time spent with her family. She cherished her faith in the Lord and was a member of the First Reformed Church of Rock Valley, where she taught 3 year old Sunday School for many years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children; daughter, Winova (Roger) Van Regenmorter of Orange City, IA and their family: Brad (Linda) Van Regenmorter and Tim (Allison) Van Regenmorter; daughter, Marjorie “Mick” (Darrel) Van Regenmorter of Orange City, IA and their family: Melissa (Brian) Moser, Daryl (Sara) Van Regenmorter, Daniel (Jennifer) Van Regenmorter and David (Abi) Van Regenmorter; daughter, Deanna (Kenneth) DeWit of Hull, IA and their family: Matthew (Dawn) DeWit, Darin (Janelle) DeWit and Benjamin (Danae) DeWit; daughter, Milinda (Loren) Leloux of Rock Valley and their family: Gretchen (Adam) Shafer and Marcus (Megan) Leloux; 31 great-grandchildren; and sister, Christine Kersbergen of Rock Valley.

In heaven Gertrude joins her husband, Matt; her grandson, Kenton DeWit; and her parents.
