Garret John Van Voorst

Inwood, IA: Garret John Van Voorst, 92, of Inwood, Iowa, died Monday, September 12, 2022, at Hegg Health Center in Rock Valley, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, at 10:30 AM at Inwood Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Adam Eisenga officiating. The service will be livestreamed https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGBiMijkSHGiiGj3TgvXX9g. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery of Inwood. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Friday, September 16, from 5:30-7:00 PM at Inwood CRC.

   Memorials may be given to Inwood Christian School. Porter Funeral Home of Inwood is assisting the family with arrangements.

   Garret John Van Voorst, son of Gerrit and Hilda (Sterkenburg) Van Voorst, was born August 4, 1930, at Sioux Center, Iowa. Garret grew up in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1948. On May 16, 1951, Garret was united in marriage with Harriet Nobel at Ireton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sioux Center and Garret worked as an auto mechanic. In 1962, Garret and Harriet moved to Inwood, Iowa where Garret continued working as an auto mechanic and later he worked as a bus mechanic.

   Garret loved his family and enjoyed when they could spend time together. He also enjoyed camping, traveling, restoring old vehicles and woodworking. Some of Garret’s woodworking projects included toys, furniture, and clocks. He even made each granddaughter their own jewelry box. In addition to his hobbies, Garret was a longtime active member of Inwood Christian Reformed Church.

   Garret is survived by his wife of 71 years, Harriet; 3 children, Verlyn (Karen) Van Voorst, Gene (Gail) Van Voorst, both of Inwood, and Melinda (Tim) Dykstra of Acworth, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Dawn Van Voorst of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 14 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild expected soon.

   Preceding Garret in death were his parents, Gerrit and Hilda; son, David Van Voorst; grandson, Nathan Van Voorst; 2 sisters, Alice Burgers and Minnie Dirksen; and 2 brothers, Richard Van Voorst and John “Hans” Van Voorst.
