Elsie Kooima

Elsie Kooima, 92, of Rock Valley, Iowa died Thursday, September 04, 2014 at Whispering Heights. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Gideon Wamala officiating. Burial will follow at the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be 2-4 pm Sunday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Elsie was born April 22, 1922 in Sanborn, Iowa and was a daughter of George and Dora (Kroese) Terpstra. After George died, Dora married Dick Van Beek who adopted two year old Elsie into the family. She graduated from Rock Valley Public High School and obtained her teaching certificate at Northwestern College at Orange City, Iowa. Elsie married Edward Kooima on October 9, 1945 in Rock Valley and together lived SW of Rock Valley. Elsie had a love for teaching and first taught in country school and then taught junior high at Rock Valley Christian School. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers; was active in her church’s ladies aid; enjoyed riding around the countryside in Ed’s red pickup; having the whole family over for Sunday dinner and doing needle work. Ed died June 10, 2005.

Elsie is survived by her four sons, Terrence (Lyla) Kooima, Douglas (Wilma) Kooima, Leon (Karen) Kooima, and Bradley (Kathy) Kooima all Rock Valley; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene Van Den Top and Maxine Hansen both of Rock Valley; sister-in-law, Gertrude Rozeboom of Rock Valley; and brothers-in-law, Art Kooima of Rock Valley and Ted Ribbens of Sioux Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward and brother, George H. Van Beek.
