Hawarden, Iowa- Edward L. Pies, 77, of Hawarden, died Saturday, February 8, 2014 at his residence in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester, South Dakota with Military Rites by the Two Oaks American Legion Post 254 of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Edward L. Pies was born January 24, 1937 in Twin Brooks, South Dakota, the son of Nickolas and Julia (De Maris) Pies. He served in the US Air Force in Korea and Vietnam, with his final discharge in 1982. Following the service he lived in northwest Iowa, mostly in Hawarden, where he was an over the road truck driver. He worked for many different companies in the area.
He was very honored to have served in the military, was a member of the DAV, and appreciated the great care he received at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. He loved to fish, hunt, watch football, and work on cars. His greatest hobby was his children and grandchildren.
Edward is survived by his children, Edward, Jr. (Rosena), Kristie, Tammy (Randy), Tim (Kristi) Becky (Jason), twins Shelly (Mike) and Kelly, Kevin (Kayla) and Kyle; his siblings, Albert, Lloyd (Fern), Grace, Melvin (Sandy), Robert (Carol), Carol, Diane, and Dale (Cheryl); 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and 'Buddy', his buddy.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Julie; great-grandchild, Elijah; brother, Nick, Jr.; and sister, Betty.
