Duane Garrett Jurrens was born August 22, 1934 in Kimball, South Dakota. He grew up on a farm near Alcester, South Dakota. On September 2, 1953 Duane married Delores Evelyn Strong at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden with Father Graff officiating. Duane and Delores were blessed with 60 years of marriage and 8 children.
He worked for the railroad before becoming a milkman for many years with Formost Dairy in Hawarden. He later began his career as a long haul truck driver for many different trucking companies.
In the evenings, after the supper dishes were done – Duane and Delores would pass the night away playing Rummy 500 – betting up to .25¢ per hand. Each had their own coin cup and there were no “loans” allowed! Duane loved to hunt and fish, especially the fishing trips with his sons each year to Pierre. Duane liked doing his yard work, which some days would take many hours! He enjoyed his “coffee buddies”, including Vince Johnson, Vince Hook, Larry Ruhland, and many others. Duane was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a former Grand Knight.
Delores passed away earlier this year on January 16, 2014.
Among those who survive and gratefully shared his life are their eight children, Debbie (Jim) Huenink, Hawarden, Doug Jurrens, Lebanon, MO, Dale (Pat) Jurrens, Alcester, SD Dean (Bonnie) Jurrens, Hawarden, Danny Jurrens (Brenda), Beresford, SD, Dru “Toot” (Barb) Jurrens, Hawarden, Dawn Sorensen, Mitchell, SD, Darcy Jurrens (Dave), Hawarden; 22 Grandchildren; 22 Great- Grandchildren; 3 Great-Great Grandchildren; sisters, Donna Anderberg of Alcester, South Dakota and Delores Helma of Bismark, North Dakota; sisters-in-law, Darlene (Ed) Hartman of Alcester, South Dakota, Larae (John) Polley, Humboldt, Iowa, and Roger (Eve) Strong of El Paso, Texas; his special dog, Daisy Mae; and many friends.
