HAWARDEN, IOWA – Dorothy M. McMillan, 73, of Hawarden, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022, at her home in Hawarden under hospice care and surrounded by her family.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Hawarden with Pastor Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Dorothy Marie McMillan was born December 17, 1948, in Hawarden, Iowa the daughter of Earl and Wilma (Otten) Anderson. She lived in Deadwood, South Dakota in early childhood and returned to Hawarden where she graduated from West Sioux High School in 1967.
Dorothy married Charles McMillan on February 27, 1970, in Hawarden. She worked at Coilcraft from age 16 until her retirement, taking a 5-year break to stay at home with Jason after the deaths of her parents and two children, Mark and Teresa in 1978. She worked at the Hawarden Steak House from 2004 to 2014.
She enjoyed playing cribbage, going out dancing with Charlie, spending time with her family, cooking, and working in the garden. She spent her retirement with her family, living her best life, traveling with grandsons to Myrtle Beach in 2016, South Padre Island in 2017, Gatlinburg, Tennessee Smokey Mountains twice, Myrtle Beach again in 2018 and Galveston Island in 2021. Dorothy loved walking the beach with her boys, looking for shells and sharks’ teeth. She loved going to her grandson’s football games and wrestling meets and supported them in everything they did. She loved their big Sunday suppers with family and friends, and always enjoyed going out for supper at the Spink Café.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Charles of Hawarden; son, Jason McMillan and wife Alisha of Hawarden; grandsons, Ashton, Keegan, Eli and Brody McMillan, and Preston Province all of Hawarden; her precious cat; 2 sisters-in-law, Deb Anderson of Akron, Iowa and Jan Williams of Hawarden; a brother-in-law and his wife, Tom and Ellen McMillan of Lincoln, Nebraska; and brother-in-law, Steve McMillan of Alcester, South Dakota; her nieces, Sheila, Jennifer, Melissa, Amy, Kathy, Rachel, Erin, Julie, Michele, and Sheri; and her nephews, Scott, Chad, Eddie, Michael, Chris, and Jeremy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Wilma Anderson; 2 children, Mark and Teresa McMillan; 2 brothers, Butch Anderson and Jerry Anderson; sister-in-law, Retta Anderson; brother-in-law, Richard Williams; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herb and Maxine McMillan; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred and Carol Lantz.
