Dorothy Hulshof

Ireton, Iowa – Dorothy H. Hulshof, 84, of Hawarden, Iowa, formerly of Ireton, Iowa died on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 24th at the First Reformed Church in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Private family burial at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery will precede the memorial service. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with the family present from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Ireton Community Center. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Dorothy H. Hulshof was born August 29, 1932 near Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Christina (Weyers) Lockhorst. She grew up in Sioux County, graduating from the Ireton High School in 1950. She lived in Ireton until her marriage to Melvin Hulshof on November 14, 1958. They lived on the family farm until 2000 when Melvin and Dorothy retired into Ireton. Beginning in 2014, Dorothy made her home at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa

Dorothy was a member of the First Reformed Church in Ireton where she was in the woman’s guild, taught Sunday School, was music leader, and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Hope Haven Auxiliary, Red Hatters club of Ireton, the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary, and crochet group of women. Most of all, Dorothy was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin, living at the Mica Hill Estates Assisted Living in Hawarden; three children and their families, Glenda and husband Randy Van Wyhe and their sons, Austin and Aaron and his wife Chantelle; Dennis and wife Mindi and their children, Molly and Kenny; and Lyle and wife, Stephanie and their children, Mitchell, Zachary, and Emily; her siblings, Jeanette Boogerd of Hull, Iowa, Donald and Deanna Lockhorst of Ireton, Christina and Garold Cleveringa of Sioux Center, Grace and Herman Oldenkamp of Orange City, Iowa; her sisters- in-law, Priscilla Lockhorst of Ireton and Jacoba Hulshof of Hawarden; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Christina; infant son, Kenneth Lynn Hulshof on January 18, 1963; her siblings, Peter Lockhorst, Adrianna Bultman, and Paul Lockhorst; and her in-laws, Lester Webert, Darold Bultman, Fred Boogerd, Geraldine Lockhorst, Everett Hulshof, Jacob Hulshof, and Mary Ann Hulshof.
