Rock Valley, IA: Doris Van Ness, 85, died Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Rock Rapids Health Centre. Visitation with the family will be one hour before the funeral at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, January 23, 2014 and the funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., all at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rock Valley. Rev. Jim Locke will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery south of Rock Valley. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Doris was born June 5, 1928 at Zeeland, North Dakota to Rinehardt and Pauline (Pfeiffer) Bauer. Doris married Cecil Van Ness on October 1, 1950 at Zeeland, North Dakota. They lived at Canton, South Dakota and Sioux City, Iowa before moving to Rock Valley in 1952. Doris attended Nettleton Business College and later worked at Hope Haven as a cook. Doris and Cecil were charter members at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Cecil died on September 7, 2006. Doris enjoyed yard work, cooking, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren. She moved to the Rock Rapids Health Centre on April 11, 2011.

Doris is survived by her sons, Perry (Marie) Van Ness of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Curtis Van Ness of Milford, Iowa, Charles (Connie) Van Ness of Lawrence, Kansas, and Fred Van Ness of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Sarah Payne of Spencer, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; infant son, Jeffrey; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters.
