Donald Arthur Van Egdom was born January 12, 1935, in Lyon County near Inwood, Iowa, the son of Peter and Jennie (Herman) Van Egdom. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1954.

Don married Lois Schneider on February 12, 1955, in Luverne, Minnesota. To this union 5 daughters and one son were born. Don worked for his brothers until being drafted into the US Army in 1957. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas before being sent to Erlangen, Germany, until being honorably discharged in 1959.

Don then worked for LG Everist and Coop Gas and Oil from 1959 to 1964, when he started Don’s Pump Service. In 1972, the family moved from their residence in Hawarden, Iowa to a farm at the entrance of Oak Grove State Park. Don started farming the home place as well as operating Don’s Pump Service, which he ran for 26 years until 1990. He then farmed full time until retirement in 2005.

Following retirement, Don and Lois moved to a home in Sioux Center until they moved to Aspen Heights in Hull, Iowa. Just recently, they moved to Crown Pointe in Sioux Center.

Don and Lois loved to travel and were fortunate to spend time together in Africa, Alaska, Europe, as well as many other destinations. They cherished trips taken with family. Don served as a deacon at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church and as an elder at the Community Reformed Church.

Don was and always had been a farmer at heart. The only thing he loved more than farming was being able to share it with the numerous grandkids and great grandkids. He was truly happiest in the tractor or combine. After retirement he was able to pursue another passion: restoring antique tractors and riding in numerous tractor rides. You could find him at MJ’s in Sioux Center having coffee with the group that met there. He never met a stranger.

Don loved his family and the times they spent together. His teasing, joking, smile, and sense of humor were the best. You couldn’t leave without a hug!

Don is survived by his wife, Lois; 6 children, Donine Ruhland of Omaha, Nebraska, Lori Peterson (Brent) of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Rachele Warner (Darrell) of Sioux Center, Stacey Johnson (Stuart) of Hawarden, Robert Van Egdom (Michelle) of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Jamie Moothart living in Hawarden; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Zeanna Van Egdom of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Norman Ykema of Luverne, Minnesota; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Jennie; 5 brothers, John and wife Jennie, Edward and wife Jeanette, Theodore, Peter Jr., and Elmer; and 3 sisters, Elizabeth Vander Esch and husband Henry, Nellie Vande Stroet and husband Gilbert, and Evelyn Ykema.
