HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Donald Harry Schlueter, 98, of Hawarden, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at Hillcrest Healthcare Services in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025, at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden with Chaplain Richard Cogan officiating. Burial with Military Rites by the Two Oaks American Legion Post 254 of Hawarden and the US Navy Honor Guard will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Fellowship and refreshments will be at the Eagle’s Aerie #1865 in Hawarden following the committal service.
Donald Harry Schlueter was born March 15, 1927, to his parents Walter G. “Jack” Schlueter and Grace (Storts) Schlueter. He was born one of eight children and raised in Calliope, Iowa. At an early age, he worked at the ice house that was located on the Sioux River. Don was a grand nephew of Lettie Storts, one of the first settlers in Calliope.
When Don was 18, he enlisted in the US Navy, he was a Seabee, (construction battalion), and he was discharged in 1946. After the military, he lived in Reno, Nevada for a short time, returning to Hawarden in the early fifties. Don married Edith Bolluyt on October 19, 1953. He worked for LG Everist Gravel, then began a career with Sioux County, starting as an equipment operator and later became a foreman. He was a foreman for Sioux County for 26 years before retiring in 1989.
Edith passed away October 17, 1986.
Don loved to fish, he enjoyed painting local scenery, and he was an avid dog lover.
Don is survived by three daughters, Janice (Doug) Herman of Iowa City, Iowa, Gayle (Larry) Harper of Benton, Arkansas, and Pam (Don) Finch of Sparks, Nevada; 2 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith and his siblings and families.
