HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ David Bruce Helgevold, DDS, 81, of Hawarden, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Sturgill Hospice House in Brooksville, Florida.
No services are planned at this time. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.
David Bruce Helgevold was born February 2, 1943, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Maxine (Schaeffer) Helgevold. He attended elementary and high school in Ayrshire, Iowa. David went to college in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a year in Storm Lake, Iowa and then the University of Iowa, where he received his bachelor’s degree and then his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1967.
David married Mary Keepers on August 13, 1966, in Cylinder, Iowa. He served with the US Army Dental Corps from 1968 to 1971 at Ft. Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone. The couple then moved to Hawarden, Iowa where David was in private practice as a dentist, retiring in 2004. While living in Hawarden, David was a Boy Scout leader for several years in the 1970’s. He was a member of Rotary International for 30 years and a member of the Civil Air Patrol for 10 years. David’s hobbies included fishing, flying, and playing golf, plus volunteer service on Calliope Village buildings. Beginning in 2005, David and Mary began to spend their winters in Hernando Beach, Florida.
David is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister-in-law, Naomi (Mark) Helgevold of Macon, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul Helgevold and wife Eunice of Oelwein, Iowa and Mark Helgevold of New Richmond, Wisconsin; and sister, Janis and husband Leo Maguire of Wangaratta, Australia.
