IRETON, IOWA- Darlene Westergard, 86, of Orange City, formerly of Ireton, Iowa, died Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa with Pastor Sarah Nye officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.
Darlene Westergard was born February 18, 1927 in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, near Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Elsie (Schuette) Pageler. She attended elementary school in Craig, Iowa and graduated from Ireton High School. Later in life, in 1973, she attended Beauty School in Le Mars.
Darlene married Fred. J. Westergard on September 23, 1946 in Craig, Iowa. They farmed near Ireton until moving into Ireton in 1977. Following her graduation from Beauty School, Darlene managed the beauty shop in Grants Department Store in Sioux City. She later owned and operated the Red Flair Salon in Hawarden. Following the salon's fire, Darlene ran the shop out of her home. Fred died September 8, 1995.
Four years ago Darlene started living in Landsmeer Ridge in Orange City, and in October of this year she moved into Prairie Ridge. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and playing cards, especially pinochle with friends and family.
She is survived by her three children, Mary De Goei and husband Dale of Springdale, Arkansas, Randall and wife Ruth of Hawarden, and Carl and wife Colleen of Ireton; two brothers, Darold (Verlis) Pageler of Omaha, Nebraska and Stanley (Mary) Pageler of Le Mars, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Donald and Vernon; and grandson, Christopher De Goei.
