HUDSON, SOUTH DAKOTA - Clara R. Lewis, 85, of Hudson, South Dakota, died Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Morningside Manor in Alcester, South Dakota.
Funeral Service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hudson Lutheran Church with Rev. Lori Marty officiating. Burial will follow in the Eden Cemetery at Hudson. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hudson. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Clara Brown Lewis was born May 11, 1928 in Osceola, Iowa, the daughter of Ira and Margaret (Campbell) Brown. She attended school in Osceola. Clara married Clarence Blake, Jr. in 1945.
She lived in many places throughout the United States, including Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, and South Dakota. She married Verne Lewis on September 29, 1953 in Omaha, Nebraska. Clara worked at a Dairy Queen in Norton, Kansas and later at Coil Craft in Hawarden, Iowa for 4 years. They moved to Hudson, South Dakota in 1971. She was employed at Fullenkamp Drug Store for 6 years before becoming a cook at the Colonial Manor. She retired in 2001 after working at Colonial Manor for 22 years. Verne died on April 22, 1985.
Clara was a past member of the Hudson Ambulance and the United Church of Christ in Hudson. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, collecting dolls, ceramics, gardening, reading books, and listening to music. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Clara is survived by her sons, Gary (special friend Laura) of Hawarden, Iowa and Tom (wife Judy) of Hudson, South Dakota; grandkids, Bryan Blake, Nick Blake, Mike (Erin) Jansen, Cindy (Jason) Hayes, and Tyler Lewis; and great-grandkids, Madisyn and Evan Jansen, and Nixon Hayes.
She was preceded in death by her spouses, Verne Lewis and Clarence Blake; daughter, Judy in infancy; parents, Ira and Margaret Brown; and her siblings, Dale Simpson, Charles Brown, Elmer Brown, Raymond Brown, Jesse Brown, Robert Brown, Mabel Brown, and Ira Brown.
