Carrie Serck

Hudson, SD: On December 31, 2020, Carrie Ann Serck, 95, of Hudson, South Dakota, went to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ. She lived a life of service and faith and is now with her beloved husband, Bernard, and her son, Jack. Carrie Ann’s memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Hudson Lutheran Church with Rev. Kevin Jensen officiating. Inurnment will be held prior to the service at 9:30 AM at Eden Cemetery of Hudson. Porter Funeral Home of Hudson is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Hudson Lutheran Church.     Carrie Ann was born in Hudson, South Dakota on January 12, 1925, to loving parents, Chris and Hazel Anderson. She spent her youth on a farm north of Hudson, attended elementary school at Bertrand Rural School, and graduated high school at Hudson High School in 1943. On July 12, 1944, she married the love of her life, Bernard Serck. They celebrated 55 anniversaries before Bernard’s passing in 1999.     Carrie Ann was a life-long resident of Hudson. She and Bernard, together, were involved in many facets of community life including, the Hudson School, Cub and Boy Scouts, the Hudson Lutheran Church, and serving and delivering meals at the Senior Diner. Carrie Ann also enjoyed the Ladies Aide, Quilting Group, and Sewing Circle. She created banners and alter cloths for the church to display. The Quilt Group she belonged to sent hundreds of quilts to Lutheran World Relief.     Carrie worked for many years as a nurse at Hudson Hospital. Her career goal of becoming a registered nurse was interrupted when she decided to marry. However, she was able to complete her dream by working as a nurse first with Dr. Huitson then, for many rewarding years, with Dr. M.W. Meyers. Her contributions to the Hudson Hospital and Clinic included caring for patients and making house calls. People in her care often said she had “healing hands”.    Carrie was also known as an amazing hostess. She and Bernard hosted many family gatherings to celebrate birthdays and holidays. She loved to treat people to one of her famous angel food cakes or her delicate sugar cookies. We all remember the many special dishes she prepared for our enjoyment. Many of these included Scandinavian specialties like lefse, rosettes, Swedish tea rings, potato bologna, Swedish meatballs and others. She provided countless trays of cookies, candies, and hot dishes for church or school activities and for neighbors. She was a special neighbor to all the Lutheran pastors and their families who lived in the parsonage across the alley from her home.    Carrie Ann was a wonderful seamstress. Her sewing skills included clothing for her children and grandchildren, prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and Easter frocks. She made beautiful dolls and doll clothes. Later when she became interested in quilting, she created lovely hand quilted gifts for her family and church family. She also perfected a Scandinavian handwork called Hardanger embroidery and counted cross stitch. For her, sewing was a labor of love.    She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Hazel Anderson; husband, Bernard Serck; son, Jack Serck; infant grandson, Paul Mitchell Serck; two brothers, John Anderson and Norman (Mavis) Anderson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chris and Elsie Serck, and three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Tony) Heuer, Marie (Rolfe) Cole, and Eunice (Kermit) VanDenBos.     Carrie is survived by her cherished children, Constance Ann Serck of Canton, South Dakota, Bernadette Serck Peeke (Bryan) of Olathe, Kansas, Chris and Beth Serck, Paul and Julie Serck, and Bill and Kathy Serck, all of Hudson; twelve grandchildren: Amy, Nicholas, Nathan, Joshua, Luke, Mary, Jacquelyn, Jonathon, Amanda, Phillip, Marit, and Carl; and 25 great grand-children. She loved her nieces and nephews who were like her own children.    We are grateful for her love, guidance and wisdom throughout our lives. The family would like to thank the very special care givers who touched her life at Hudson Care Center and the Alcester Care Center as she made this journey. We are also indebted to Elsie Anderson for her years of loving care. The family is also grateful for the care she received from ASERA Care Hospice.    Carrie Ann was admired for her loving, caring heart and strong faith. She was known for many acts of kindness. Carrie Ann’s legacy included a life of faith and of service to others. She wouldn’t have had it any other way!   Service Program Click to download / open
