Carol Van Stelton was born on February 20, 1949 to John and Fannie (Reurink) Deelstra in Chester, South Dakota. She was raised, along with her sister and brother, on a farm in the same community. She attended Franklin School in both her elementary and high school years and graduated from high school in 1967. Carol pursued her education by attending Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa from 1967-1971 where she majored in music education. After graduation, she taught in Northwest Iowa for 10 years.
In 1981 she married Virgil Van Stelton and then moved to Sibley, Iowa. Virgil and Carol were blessed with two children, Shelli Rens and Jeff Van Stelton. Carol loved her children very much and enjoyed attending their activities. Carol was an accomplished pianist who spent countless hours sharing her love of music with others by accompanying students, teaching piano lessons, substitute teaching, and using her musical talents at church. Virgil and Carol spent many hours outside gardening and generously gave their produce to neighbors and friends.
In 2015, Virgil and Carol moved to Inwood to be closer to family. Carol enjoyed meeting new friends and attending women’s Bible studies. Carol, most especially, enjoyed her grandchildren, Lydia, Max, Garrett, Collin, and Emma. She delighted in their accomplishments and enjoyed watching them play.
Diagnosed with cancer in February of 2016, Carol was courageous in her fight. She maintained a very positive attitude and was an encourager to her family. Through her struggle and a variety of treatments, her faith remained strong.
Carol will be deeply missed for her loving spirit and example of selfless sharing. Grateful for sharing her life are her Husband, Virgil; Daughter and Son-in-Law, Shelli and Andrew Rens and grandchildren Lydia, Garrett, and Collin; Son and Daughter-In-Law, Jeff and Lindsey Van Stelton and grandchildren Max and Emma; and brother and sister-in-Law, Stan and Elaine Deelstra as well as countless other relatives.
