Sheldon, Iowa: Carol Statema, 67, of Sheldon, Iowa died unexpectedly on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. Memorial service will be held Friday, July 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Reformed Church at Sheldon with Rev. Dave Van Kley officiating. Visitation will be held during the luncheon, following the memorial service. Burial of cremated remains will take place at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley, Iowa. Carol Statema, daughter of Wilbur and Jacoba (Veltkamp) Vander Bok, was born October 28, 1947 at Rock Valley, Iowa. She graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa and went on to Stewarts School of Cosmetology in Sioux City, Iowa. Carol was united in marriage with James Statema on June 19, 1968 in Rock Valley. Carol worked as a hairdresser in Rock Valley and George, Iowa before she and Jim moved to Sheldon, Iowa in 1981. While living in Sheldon, she sold home interiors and later served as the worship coordinator at Bethel Reformed Church for nearly 20 years, retiring in April 2015. Carol loved camping and having family and friend get-togethers. She also enjoyed traveling. Carol will be remembered for her willingness to help people and her big heart.
Carol is survived by her daughters, Shelli (Ray) Comfort of Sanborn, Iowa and Janell (Roger) Garrett of Ireton, Iowa; one sister, Sandra (Robert) Olson of Hopkins, Minnesota; and her adopted family members, Sherry Poelstra and Karmen Pace.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Jacoba Vander Bok; husband, Jim Statema and sister, Geneva Smith.
