Bernice "Bernie" Ver Steeg

Bernice “Bernie” Ver Steeg, of Flowery Branch, Georgia, formerly of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Flowery Branch. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Reformed Church at Rock Valley with Rev. Garry Nyenhuis officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Bernice “Bernie” Christina (Aschenmeier) Ver Steeg, daughter of Peter and Mary (Sheldon) Aschenmeier, was born June 7, 1939 in Alberta, Canada. Bernie grew up in Alberta and after accepting the Lord at the age of 19, she immigrated to the United States to attend Dordt College. She taught fifth grade at Central Minnesota Christian School from 1960-1962. Bernie married Clarence Ver Steeg the summer of 1962 and they moved to Rock Valley, Iowa where they made their home. Bernie taught at Sheldon Christian School from 1962-1963 and Rock Valley Christian School from 1965-1967 and then worked in various capacities around education, ending with ten years as Administrative Assistant to the Rock Valley School District Superintendent. In 1991, Clarence and Bernie moved to Sugar Hill, Georgia which is a suburb of Atlanta. Bernie ended her career in education as Registrar at Asher School of Business from 1992-1996 and as Academic Dean of that school from 1997-1999. She later served as Administrative Assistant to the senior pastor at Sugar Hill United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Bernie enjoyed reading, scrapbooking, gardening, singing in choir and being a Bible study teacher.

Bernie is survived by her two sons, Alan (Kathy) Ver Steeg of Rock Valley and Ted (Michelle) Ver Steeg of Flowery Branch, Georgia; two daughters, Lora (Michael) Bouwman and Beth (John) Cardin, both of Buford, Georgia; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Ver Steeg; two brothers, Harold and Peter Aschenmeier; and one sister, Theresa Rennie.
