HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Bernice “Bernie” Elizabeth Dimmick, 100, of Hawarden, died Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. Bernice “Bernie” Elizabeth Dimmick was born August 31, 1914 in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Guy Harkness, Sr. and Anna Mae Tillotson. She was the second of fourteen children. Bernie attended Sayles Grade School in Union County, South Dakota and attended Akron High School.
She married Roy Dimmick on October 3, 1934. They farmed for several years before moving into Hawarden, Iowa. Bernie worked for 28 years at Coilcraft in Hawarden. Roy passed away October 1, 1976.
Bernie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. She was active with the Hawarden Senior Center and Wee Care and was a foster grandparent for several years. She had a love for baking~especially breads and cinnamon rolls, and baking cookies with her grandkids. Bernie enjoyed watching the TV shows “Golden Girls” and “Lawrence Welk” She and Roy enjoyed going to dances together. Bernie thoroughly enjoyed her 100th birthday celebration with family and friends this past fall.
She is lovingly survived by four children, Gerry (Glenn) Brandsma of Spencer, Iowa, Jeanette (Ron) Wendt of Sioux City, Iowa, Bud (Linda) Dimmick of Hawarden, and Shirley (Rick) Larson of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; many grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandchildren; also surviving are a brother-in-law, Dick Milliken; sisters-in-law, Pauline Harkness and Lucille Harkness; and many of her nephews and nieces.
Bernie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Carol; a great-grandson, Lane; and all of her siblings, brothers, Everett, Don, Arnold, Vernon, Guy, Jr., Alvin, Jayce, and Blair, and sisters, Dorothy, Betty, Beryl, Benita, and Beatrice.
