Hudson, South Dakota: Barney Koopsma, 86, of Hudson, South Dakota died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Hudson Care and Rehab Center. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Hudson Lutheran Church. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the Hudson Lutheran Church. Rev. Lori Marty will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Eden Cemetery at Hudson, South Dakota. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Barney was born January 22, 1929 in rural Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Joe and Anna (Snyder) Koopsma. He attended school through the 8th grade and then began farming in the Fairview area. Barneys entire life was devoted to the farming operation, both livestock and rural crops. Barney proudly served in the United States Army from August 21, 1951 to August 11, 1953 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Austria as a military police. He married Geri Hill and to this union three sons were born, Jody, James, and Chad. Barney enjoyed walleye fishing with his friends and was heavily involved in the Bergstrom-Bodeen Post 128 where he served as treasurer for over 15 years.
Barney is survived by his sons, Jody Koopsma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, James Koopsma of rural Fairview, South Dakota, and Chad Koopsma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three grandchildren, James Lee Koopsma, Katrina Koopsma, and Steven Koopsma; 2 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Theresa (Larry) Turner of Omaha, Nebraska and Ilene (Grant) Evanson of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Koopsma of Hudson, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Anna; brother, Richard Koopsma; sister, Bertha (Cork) Havelaar; and niece, Julie (Havelaar) Byre.
