Barbara Jean Pember, age 90, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, Iowa. Barb resided at Whispering Heights for several years and the family truly appreciates the wonderful care Barb received at Whispering Heights.
A service to honor the lives of Barbara and her daughter, Jacqueline, who passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley, Iowa, with Rev. Steve Ziebarth officiating. Interment for Barb will follow at Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley. Visitation with the family will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, also at the Pioneer United Methodist Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Pioneer United Methodist Church, Friends of Rock Valley, Rock Valley Public Library or Whispering Heights.
Barb, daughter of Raymond and Mary (Barr) Pryor, was born January 28, 1934, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Barbara attended school at Hayes Township School in Storm Lake.
Barb was united in marriage to Hale D. Pember on November 27, 1957, at Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley, Iowa. Barb met Hale while both were employed at McWilliams Drug in Cherokee, Iowa, Barb as a clerk and Hale as a pharmacist. Prior to meeting Hale, Barb was united in marriage to Wayne Buck in Anthon, Iowa and they were blessed with one daughter, Jacqueline Buck. Barb and Hale were blessed with three more children, Ramona, Deborah, and Paul. Barb and Hale moved from Cherokee to Rock Valley, Iowa in 1958. Hale and Barb took over Pember Drug, the family business, and spent the rest of their lives working and living in Rock Valley raising their children. Barb and Hale thoroughly enjoyed living in the Rock Valley community.
Barb was a member of Pioneer United Methodist Church. Barb was a hard worker. When she was not busy with her family or working at the drug store, she found joy volunteering within the community with various organizations including the library, church and school. Barb and Hale also enjoyed attending all activities in which their children were involved including many high school sporting events.
Barb enjoyed reading, bowling, golfing, and playing any kind of card games. She was part of a golf and bowling league and a bridge club for many years. Although Barb and Hale traveled very little, she always looked forward to a few small trips.
Barb is survived by three children, Ramona (Joseph) Baldeck of Worley, Idaho; Deborah (Jeff) Finnegan of Sioux Falls and their children Maria and Anna; and Paul (Miranda) Pember of Rock Valley and their children Logan and Riley Ann. Barb is also survived by Jacqueline’s four children - Tracey, Jeremy, Tabitha, Shannon and 9 great- grandchildren.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Pryor; her spouse, Hale Pember; her daughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Whyte; her grandson, Benjamin; and sisters, Ada Marie (Rolly) Roberts and Verna Mae (Mike) Patterson.
Jacqueline Whyte, affectionately known as Jackie, 69, passed away under the compassionate care of Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
Jacqueline was born in Iowa on November 2, 1954, and throughout her life she loved her family and friends dearly. She will be remembered fondly for her thoughtful and caring nature. Jacqueline enjoyed playing cards and board games with her family. Jackie spent many years living in San Diego with her late spouse, Michael, children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved living close to the ocean and would often take walks on the beach.
Jackie took a lot of pride as a bookkeeper. Her coworkers would describe her as always dependable and had an incredible work ethic. Most recently, Jackie worked at Fireplace Pros.
Jackie will be remembered fondly by her children, Tracey, Jeremy, Tabitha, and Shannon; her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. On the Pember side: mother, Barbara Pember and siblings, Ramona, Deborah, and Paul. On the Buck side of the family: stepmother, Hulda and siblings, Harry, Rita, Anita, and Frank.
Jackie was preceded in death by her father, Wayne; stepfather, Hale; brother, Steven; and son, Benjamin.
