Barbara E. Janssen

   Barbara (Barb) Eloise Janssen (neé Eckert), age 73, a longtime resident of Hawarden, Iowa, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

   Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, February 21, 2020 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa.

   Funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church, LCMS in Hawarden, Iowa, with Pastor Joshua Lowe officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Everyone is welcome to attend.

   A catered meal will be served in the basement of the Trinity Lutheran Church following the interment. 

  Barb was born in Rapid City, South Dakota to Hilda Eckert on September 16, 1946.  Barb was a 1964 graduate of Rapid City High School in Rapid City, South Dakota. She married Marlin Janssen on May 18, 1968 in Hawarden, Iowa at Trinity Lutheran Church.

   Barb loved cats and enjoyed reading, crocheting, and playing cards. Together with her husband, Marlin, they started a card club that ran for almost 35 years and made many lifelong friends.

   Barb was preceded in death by her mother, Hilda Eckert; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bernice and Lorenz Janssen; brother-in-law, Richard Janssen; and son-in-law, Dennis Birmes.

   Barb is survived by her husband, Marlin Janssen of Hawarden, Iowa; daughters, Staci Birmes and Lori Janssen of Hawarden; grandchildren, Ashlee Birmes of LeMars, Iowa and Dylan Birmes of Hawarden; great-grandchild, Cooper Weaver of LeMars; sister-in-law, Linda Peterson (née Janssen) and husband Glendon Peterson of LeMars; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet and Brad Hanson of Westminster, Colorado; nieces, Amy Smith of Waukee, Iowa; Kelli Poppenhagen of Aurora, Colorado; nephews, Scott Janssen of Columbia, Illinois; Kyle Hanson of Laramie, Wyoming; and her cat, Samantha.
