HAWARDEN, IOWA- ARVIN W. KITCHENMASTER, 74, of Hawarden died Friday, May 8, 2015 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church LCMS in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Arvin William Kitchenmaster was born November 20, 1940, in Luverne, Minnesota to William and Anna (Lauck) Kitchenmaster. He graduated from Hills High School in Hills, Minnesota in 1958. In 1963, he earned a bachelors degree in elementary education from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. Later that year, he began his career in education at West Sioux Elementary School in Hawarden as a fourth grade teacher.
Arvin married Janice Lownes, a fellow West Sioux Elementary teacher, on June 28, 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden. He earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of South Dakota in 1966. In 1969, he became the elementary school principal at West Sioux, retiring in 2002 after thirty-nine years in education.
Arvin was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving in various roles. Over the years he was a member of many professional and community organizations, often assuming leadership positions. As a sports enthusiast, he was both a participant and a spectator. Arvin enjoyed wintering in Arizona, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. His passion was his granddaughters and attending their music and sporting events with great pride.
Arvin is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Janice; two children, William (Bill) and wife, Dawn, of Lake Andes, South Dakota; daughter, Lori Glade and husband, Terry, of Sioux City, Iowa; and Grandpas Girls, Jenna and Erica Kitchenmaster and Elizabeth and Sarah Glade; two brothers, James (Carolyn) Kitchenmaster of Luverne, Minnesota and Loren (Deborah) Kitchenmaster of Ardmore, Alabama; mother-in-law, Ila Krueger of Denison, Iowa; brother-in-law, Dennis Lownes, of Chapin, South Carolina, and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, Earl Lownes, and step-father-in-law, Lester Krueger.
Arvin cherished family above all else, living graciously and courageously with cancer the last eight months of his life.
