Arvin J. Hoogendoorn

Rock Valley, IA: Arvin J. Hoogendoorn, 81, of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Monday, October 3, 2022, under the care of his loving wife and family at his farm west of Rock Valley. The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 6, at 2:00 PM at the First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley with Rev. Matthew Haan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Wednesday, October 5, from 5:00-7:00 PM at First CRC.

   In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Arvin’s name to Rock Valley Christian School or Western Christian High School. Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley is assisting the family with arrangements. 

   Arvin John Hoogendoorn was born at his home in Hudson, South Dakota, on June 10, 1941, to Johannes Arie Hoogendoorn and Adrianna (Groeneweg) Hoogendoorn. Arvin attended Rock Valley Community School from first through fourth grade. He then attended country school from fifth through eighth grade. Arvin farmed all of his life west of Rock Valley, Iowa. He also enjoyed restoring antique cars.

   Arvin was united in marriage to Betty Kats on August 20, 1964. When asked what the best day of his life was, Arvin responded, “Being with my wife Betty.” To this union, they were blessed with 5 children: Darwin (Tracy) Hoogendoorn, Jody (Jeff) Folkens, Kristi (Scott) Tiedeman, Tamara (Mike) Haverhals, and Kari (Milton) Timmer.

   Arvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty; 5 children and their spouses; 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, Kyle Hoogendoorn, Cierra (Marcus) Overweg (Waverly, Saydie), Alyson (Rod) Banda (Isaiah), Kayla Hoogendoorn, Dylan, Riley, Reide, and Danie Folkens, Ariana, Brendan, Cade, Drew, and Summer Tiedeman, Brooke and Cole Haverhals, and Deegan and Mckinley Timmer; special additional family and their children and grandchildren, Doug (Karla) Kats, Byron (Teresa) Kats, Wes (Deb) Kats, and Kim (Steve) Haveman; brother, Gilbert (Lorraine) Hoogendoorn; 2 sisters, Coba Van Tilburg and Marge (John) Mantel; 2 sisters-in-law, Ada Hoogendoorn and Mary Hoogendoorn; and many nieces and nephews.

   Arvin was preceded in death by his parents; baby brother; 2 brothers, Joel and Marian Hoogendoorn; and brother-in-law, Marvin Van Tilburg.
