HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Anna Van Bruggen, 91, of Hawarden, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2023, at Hawarden Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Pastor Verlyn Netten officiating. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery followed by a luncheon. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral or at the luncheon. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. The funeral will be live streamed at livestream.com/hawardencrc.
The family prefers memorials be directed to the Hawarden Ambulance Association or the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church.
Anna was born January 12, 1931, at Ireton, Iowa, the daughter of Arie and Jacoba (Vanden Horn) Ravenswaay. She was raised in the Ireton area and educated at the Country School for 8 years in Ireton. She married Albert Van Bruggen on February 16, 1950. The couple made their home near Hawarden, Iowa on a dairy farm for 22 years. They then moved to town in 1969. Anna worked at Otis Radio (Coilcraft), retiring in 1996 after 27 years.
Anna was a founding member of the Hawarden Community Reformed Church. She taught Sunday school, was a youth fellowship sponsor, head of the kitchen committee for various events at the church, and a custodian. After the closure of the Community Church, Anna became a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden. Anna was an avid cook and baker, known best for her potato salad, cookies, pies, and various bars. She spent many hours embroidering and completing puzzles. She was an avid competitor in cards and board games. She was also a fan of watching all sports. She enjoyed cheering for West Sioux athletics, Iowa/Iowa State Football, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. Anna was very involved with volunteering at the Hawarden Calliope Village and was active with the American Legion, as well as the Hawarden Thrift Shop.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Darrel (Dutch) and Kathy Van Bruggen of Spencer, Iowa and David (Dutch) and Judy Van Bruggen of Hawarden; a daughter, Audrey Baumtrog of Minnetonka, Minnesota; two sisters, Arlene DeBruin of Lynden, Washington and Dorothy Tiedeman and her spouse Harlan Tiedeman of Beresford, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Van Bruggen; her parents; her sisters, Gertrude Vander Ploeg (Donald), Jeanette Netten (Peter), and Bernice DeKock (Marion); brother-in-law Jake DeBruin; and granddaughter, Melissa Hansen.
