Alice Marie Miller Kopp died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa. Visitation will be 6:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014 all at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2014 also at the church. Rev. Barb Joy will officiate. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.porterfuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
Alice Marie Miller was born June 2, 1926 in Hawarden, Iowa. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1944 and then moved to Sioux City to attend Methodist Nursing School. After her graduation in 1947 she worked as night supervisor at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City. She married Charles Kopp on October 24, 1948. They had three children, Chuck, Jane, and Robert. Alice and her family moved to Hawarden in 1963, and for many years she worked as a nurse at the Hawarden Hospital.
Taking care of people was her passion in life. She did so with her nursing, and also with her hobbies. She made quilts for her family, many from quilt blocks cut by her grandmother. Her caretaking expanded to plants and antiques, as she was an avid gardener and enjoyed refinishing old furniture. She also enjoyed riding motorcycle with her husband. In their retirement years they rode all over the country and parts of Canada.
Alice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Hazel Miller; her husband, Charles; two brothers, Robert B. and Quinten Miller; and a grandson, James Utecht.
She is survived by two sons, Chuck (Patty) of Kennewick, Washington, and Robert (Sarah) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one daughter, Jane (Ron) Utecht, of Madison, South Dakota; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Berry of Hawarden, and three sisters-in-law, Wanda Miller of Beresford, Evelyn (George) Klammer of Green Valley, AZ, and Faye Kopp of Mora, MN.
